IoT connectivity for fleet management: frequently asked questions
If you run vehicle fleets with GPS, digital tachographs or onboard cameras, these are the questions we get most often about IoT SIMs, roaming and multi-carrier.
Which SIM do I need for a vehicle GPS?+
A multi-carrier 4G/LTE-M IoT M2M SIM with a 50-200 MB plan typically covers GPS plus basic events.
Do they work in all of Europe without surcharges?+
Yes, regulated permanent roaming in the EU. For fleets crossing into UK, Morocco or Switzerland we offer specific plans.
How much data does an onboard DVR camera use?+
1-5 GB/month depending on resolution and on-demand upload. Continuous streaming can exceed 20 GB.
Can I see all my SIMs on a map?+
The portal shows last network, country and SIM status. GPS position is rendered by your fleet platform; we provide the connectivity.
What do I do when 2G is sunset?+
Replace old trackers with Cat-1 or LTE-M models. Keep the IoT SIM and the plan.
Is there an alert if the SIM is removed?+
Yes, IMEI lock rule: if the SIM is inserted in another device, it is suspended automatically.
How long until a new SIM is active in a truck?+
Minutes. Pre-provisioned SIMs activate on first power-on.
Do you support DTCO digital tachograph?+
Yes. Remote downloads work on any APN with enough bandwidth; we recommend private APN for security.
How is billing handled if vehicle usage varies?+
Shared pool across all fleet SIMs; low months offset high months.
Do I need a static IP on the GPS?+
Only if your platform needs to reach the device. Usually the GPS pushes data to your server (no static IP needed).
How do I prevent a driver from using the SIM for personal data?+
Private APN: SIMs only talk to your platform; everything else is blocked.
What about 5G in fleets?+
For GPS and telemetry it adds nothing. Only worth it for HD video streaming or ADAS.
Does it work in rural or low-coverage areas?+
Multi-carrier and LTE-M give better coverage than a single classic 4G operator, especially indoors and in mountains.
Can I assign SIMs to cost centres?+
Yes. Free-form labels and groupings in the portal with per-group billing.
Do you accept soldered MFF2 chips?+
Yes, for vehicles with vibration or vandalism. More reliable than 2FF plug-in.
