IoT connectivity in United States
The United States completed 2G and 3G sunset in 2022-2024. Any current IoT deployment requires 4G LTE, 5G, or LPWA (LTE-M / NB-IoT) devices. Three main operators (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) with uneven nationwide coverage. LTE-M is broadly available; NB-IoT has narrower coverage, mainly on AT&T and T-Mobile.
Accessible operators
- AT&T
- T-Mobile US
- Verizon
Available technologies
4G5GLTE-MNB-IoT
Typical use cases
- Freight and intermodal tracking
- Smart metering at regulated utilities
- Residential alarms (LTE-M)
- Connected agricultural equipment
- Vending and retail POS
Caveats and regulatory considerations
- 2G and 3G fully shut down. Legacy devices will NOT work
- Permanent roaming on foreign SIMs is allowed but verify the plan when sizing
- Some operators certify specific LTE module models — check AT&T/Verizon lists before OEM-ing
